Smart skin is designed for active noise control. The device consists of cylindrically curved sections of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric film, embedded in partially reticulated polyurethane acoustic foam.

The passive absorption of a foam is effective at higher frequencies, while the active input of the embedded PVDF films is effective at lower frequencies.

It is primarily developed to be used in an aircraft fuselage in order to reduce interior noise associated with turbulent boundary layer excitation
